GRANT TITLE: Intuitive and analytic management of mortality awareness: The role of normative cultural belief systems

GRANTEE: University of Missouri

PRIMARY INVESTIGATOR: Madhwa Galgali

CO-PRIMARY INVESTIGATOR: Jamie Arndt

GRANT AMOUNT: USD $15,000.00

DURATION OF GRANT PROJECT: December 01, 2024 – May 15, 2026

Description of the Project

Executive summary:

The project will use three studies to examine whether the motivation for managing the awareness of mortality unfolds “intuitively” among culturally-normative individuals but via “analytic override” among culturally-nonnormative individuals. Study 1 will test how mortality salience affects the need for cognition among Christians and atheists. Study 2 will test a conceptual replication on dogmatism. Study 3 will further explore the pattern while further manipulating the presentation of normativity of Christian and atheist worldviews. It is expected that MS (vs. control) would increase reliance on intuition (e.g., reduced NFC) when participants’ worldview is experienced as culturally normative but increase analytic override (increased NFC) when non-normative.

Itemized budget:

The total recruitment costs for the three studies were obtained from CloudResearch and are detailed below:

·        CloudResearch Toolkit fees = $1,012

·        CloudResearch Panel Fees (rare and hard-to-find samples, e.g., atheists) = $1,844

·        Participant compensation = $12,144

The total amount approved is USD $15,000.00.
